Young Bites. Dated: 4/22/2025 11:57:38 AM
POOJA THAKUR YB NEWS SERVICE JAMMU, APR 21 Around 400 migrant workers have been left stranded in Jammu after a landslide forced the closure of the vital Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, cutting off access to the Kashmir Valley and beyond. The stranded workers, many of whom were en route to jobs in Ladakh, have been temporarily accommodated at Aggarwal Sabha in Jammu. Authorities and local volunteers are working to ensure the workers have access to basic necessities, including food and shelter, as they await the reopening of the highway. Sham Lal, a migrant worker from Jharkhand, shared his concerns. “I work on a road project in Ladakh and now I am stranded here. We just want the road to reopen so we can get back to work,” he said. Another worker, Renu from Chhattisgarh, echoed the sentiment. “We are stranded here and hope the road is cleared early so that we can reach our destination,” she said. The Jammu-Srinagar highway is the only allweather road connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country and is frequently prone to landslides, especially during the rainy season. Authorities are working on a war footing to clear the debris and restore traffic at the earliest. Officials have advised travelers to check with traffic control before planning journeys in the region, as clearance operations are ongoing and weather conditions may continue to impact road connectivity.
