“THE DRUG MENACE IS A BIGGER CHALLENGE THAN TERRORISM. WHEN I JOINED, I HAD ANNOUNCED AN ALL OUT WAR AGAINST DRUGS AND THE PEOPLE RUNNING IT,” SAID, THE DIRECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE (DGP) DR SHESH PAUL VAID, WHILE CONTINUING HIS INTERACTION WITH THE YOUNG BITES.
---------------
HERE ARE THE EXCERPTS. VIJAY GUPTA VG: Drug is a menace and affecting badly to our youth, what you say? DGP: Of course yes, Drug is a menace and also a ‘bigger challenge’ than terrorism in the state and many big consignments were being ‘pumped from across the border. This year, the police have arrested 667 people in 542 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for drug peddling and smuggling. There are a lot of drugs and narcotics being pumped into J-K from across the border. It is very clear who is pumping drugs and narcotics into this state. I am trying to convince everybody, including the police force, about the bad affects. It (drugs) has the potential to destroy the society. We have made huge seizures, but there is difficulty on the legal and deaddiction fronts. It is not only the duty of police to control and end this menace from the society, the police alone cannot fight the menace and there was a concern about narco-terrorism. So, everybody needs to make efforts to save the current and future generations from this menace. VG: People friendly police, a great initiative taken by the police, what is the progress to make the police more people friendly? DGP:We are committed to develop some better and friendly relations with the public and to make our police more public friendly, we have taken many steps, police public meetings in every police station, which are being organized once or twice in a month is out biggest measure, in which we involve the locals of the area and listened to their grievances and later their grievances are being raised at the appropriate level with the concerned officials. For being friendlier, we try to sort out their issues. Starting of online complaint redress portal is another big measure. With such measures, we trying our best to aware the people about our working and in turn also seek the help of general public, which are our best informers.
Meanwhile, I have also asked my officers to try to solve the issues of every visitor in their police stations, so that his precious time should be saved.
VG: Traffic is a big issue and habitual law breakers are big reason for this problem, is there any plan to tackle them ?
DGP: It is very true that the traffic is a big issue for us and habitual law breakers are fully responsible to create traffic mess as they never bothered to obey the traffic norms and thus create difficulties for others on the roads by creating big jams.
To tackle with those law breakers, the government has now passed a new ordinance, under which fine has been hiked manifolds and I hope this will help us to control those law breakers. This will also help us to solve the issue of traffic violations by the people.
VG: What is your message for the people?
DGP: I want to appeal the people to help others in the need of time, for making their live some better. While for the youth I wanted to ask them to stay away from the drugs, obey their parents and take guidance from their seniors, this will help them to make their life better.
