Kanpur, May 19 Uttar Pradesh’s state authorities on Thursday used bulldozers to demolish illegal encroachments outside a graveyard in Kanpur. No action was taken inside the graveyard due to the presence of a waqf board in its compound. The demolition was carried out after Kanpur MP Satyadev Pachauri wrote a letter to the district magistrate and the commissioner complaining about the illegal encroachment around the graveyard located in Kanpur’s Kakadev area. Officials arrived on Thursday and demolished the houses that were built outside the graveyard. Officials said more than 100 people resided in the vicinity of the graveyard. The authorities had alerted the residents about the demolition before the drive on Thursday. Many had left after leaving their belongings at the site. However, some residents protested the demolition drive and said they will continue to stay there as they have nowhere else to go.
