New Delhi, Apr 22 Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi made a thunderous start to the County Championship sojourn with Middlesex after he picked up a threewicket haul against Glamorgan at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. After Toby Ronald-Jones got rid of opening batter Andrew Salter, Afridi spewed venom at the opposition batters. To start with, the left-arm pacer rattled Marnus Labuschagne’s woodwork. Afridi bowled one outside the off stump and Labuschagne tried to leave the ball. But the batter only saw his stumps go for a walk, after which Afridi and his Middlesex teammates erupted in jubilation. In the very next ball, Afridi dismissed Sam Northeast, who bagged a golden duck. Afridi churned out a full-pitched delivery and Northeast made a tentative poke at the delivery. But the batter found an outside edge and Robbie White took a sharp catch at second slip. The 22-year-old Afridi, in the meantime, found himself on the verge of a hat-trick. Afridi almost accomplished the milestone after he appealed loudly for a caught behind down the leg side. Kiran Karlson tried to glide the ball through fine leg, but couldn’t make a proper connection. Thereafter, the on-field umpire turned Afridi’s appeal down and the bowler was denied a hat-trick. The 23-year-old Carlson didn’t have the rub of the green go his way as Roland-Jones accounted for his wicket in the very next over. Carlson also failed to open his account as Glamorgan lost their fourth wicket with their score at 24 in 9.3 overs.
