New Delhi, Jan 20 2021 U.S. Open champion and Australian Open finalist Daniil Medvedev ended his winless run against Nick Kyrgios as the world no.2 defeated the Australian crowd favorite 7-6(1), 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in a hard-fought game at the Rod Laver Arena to advance to the third round on Thursday. An inspired Kyrgios forced a break of serve in the third set to take the match into the fourth but Medvedev, who is the highest-ranked men's player remaining following Novak Djokovic's deportation, soon regained control. A double break in the fourth set made it look easy for last year's Australian Open finalist and he will next meet 57thranked Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands for a place in the fourth round. Kyrgios, who earned wins over Medvedev in Rome and Washington in 2019, was aiming to record his first Top 5 victory since 2019, when he defeated then-World No. 3 Alexander Zverev in the Acapulco final. "I came to win this match and I am happy to do it," Medvedev said in his oncourt interview. "It was a funny match because we both served big. In the second and fourth sets I managed to return a little bit more at the crucial moments. I just want to play my best, hit good shots and hopefully that will be enough to do something big.
