Bengaluru, Jan 19 The controversy around students of a pre-university college in Karnataka’s Udupi wearing hijab to classes is still going on. The meeting to sort out the issue had failed to bring any conclusion to the on-going controversy. The meeting between the students, parents, government officials and the school management was supposed to solve the issue of the Hijab row. According to those who attended the meeting that took place on Wednesday, January 19, no conclusion was reached. This issue has been going on since January 1 2022. The management of the government pre-university college in the coastal town of Udupi barred six Muslim girls from attending classes for wearing hijab as the dress was against prescribed norms of the college. Masood Manna, State Committee Member, Campus Front of India, in a series of tweets, first stated that, “Principal Rudra Gowda has called students along with parents to college as Assistant Commissioner of Udupi District will chair a meeting to discuss the hijab issue. Yet, another day of hope for students to get their constitutional right to wear hijab.” But after the meeting, he tweeted an update saying that there was no solution and questioned the point of having a meeting and displaying an authoritarian attitude. Masood said, “These girls were practising their constitutional right. There is a lot of religious discrimination going on in the college. Festivals are organised but these girls cannot enter the class just for wearing their head scarfs.” He blamed the principal for being rude to them when the Campus Front of India approached him. He also said the students are being mentally tortured by the management for speaking to the media. However, the college development committee president, MLA Ragupathi Bhat, says this issue is being created by a few and has no standing.
