Cyclone Gulab: Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik reviews preparedness ahead of landfall

Bhubaneswar, Sep 26 Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today reviewed the preparedness in districts which could be affected by Cyclone Gulab's landfall on Sunday midnight. Laying stress on the zero-casualty mission of the state government, Naveen Patnaik has instructed collectors to wind up evacuation of people living in low-lying areas, slopes and other vulnerable pockets by 4 pm today. Reviewing the preparedness for the cyclone with high officials and district collectors through videoconferencing, Naveen Patnaik, who is in New Delhi on an official visit, said all measures should be taken to prevent the loss of human lives, the CMO informed. Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradeep Jena said, “The Chief Minister held a video conference with collectors of 11 districts Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Koraput, Ganjam, Nabarangpur, Khurda, Nayagarh, Puri and Kalahandi. The Chief Minister instructed us to finish the evacuation process by 4 pm on Sunday. The SOP has to be followed by shifting pregnant women to hospitals first.” "Naveen Patnaik has stressed the zero-casualty mission and deployment of NDRF, ODRAF and fire personnel at vulnerable and most appropriate spots for facilitating timely operations. We are still battling Covid, so the Chief Minister has directed us to ensure social distancing and wearing of masks at safe-shelters to prevent the transmission of Covid-19," he said. Evacuation of people living in mud houses and forest areas of the districts, who could be affected by the cyclone, have been asked to be evacuated and housed in safe places on a war-footing. A close watch would be kept on the embankments. As per as the latest bulletin from the Met Department, "Cyclonic storm Gulab is about 180 km eastsoutheast of Gopalpur and 240 km east-northeast of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. It is likely to move nearly westwards and cross North Andhra Pradesh - South Odisha coasts between Kalingapatnam and Gopalpur, as a cyclonic storm with maximum sustained wind speed of 75-85 kmph gusting to 95 kmph." Meanwhile, Uma Shankar Das, Scientist, IMD said the landfall process of cyclonic storm ‘Gulab’ is likely to start after 9 pm tonight. The Chief Minister has also asked to ensure basic facilities, including drinking water in cyclone shelters, along with protection of pregnant women, children and elderly persons. Stating that people in vulnerable areas should be alerted through a public announcement system about the cyclone, he said PRIs, Mission Shakti, NGOs and volunteers should.
