Bhubaneswar, Sep 26 Alleged custodial death of a 35-year-old triggered massive protests in Odisha's Bargarh district. The protesters sat on dharna and blocked roads at Gandhi Chowk in the district's Khedapalli area on Saturday. Reportedly, Govind Kumbhar of Tura village, which falls under the Bargarh town police station limits, was picked up by the police in the wee hours of Saturday in connection with a case of rioting. Later in the day, he was found dead. His wife said they were sleeping when a few policemen reached their house and took Govind with them at around 1:30 AM. Following his death, the family members demonstrated inside a hospital where Govind was taken. His brother, Jiten Kumar, went to the seventh floor of the hospital and threatened to commit suicide if the police officials responsible for Govind's death were not brought to justice. Jiten also demanded compensation for his family. Later, the family members brought him down with the help of fire service personnel. Reacting to the incident, Central Range DIG Jay Narayan Pankaj said, "It is a sad incident. We will follow all NHRC (National Human Rights Commission) guidelines. An enquiry will be conducted from the judicial magistrate to ascertain the fact. Moreover, human rights protection cell will also investigate the incident."
