Equal opportunities for all: Dalit leaders meet Rahul Gandhi, thank him for Channi's appointment as Punjab CM

New Delhi, Sep 24 Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday met a group of Dalit leaders who came to thank him for appointing first Chief Minister from Scheduled Caste community in Punjab. Within a week of appointment of first Dalit Chief Minister of Punjab, Charanjit Singh Channi, Rahul Gandhi held a long discussion with a group of Dalit leaders at his 12, Tughlaq Lane residence. After the meeting, which lasted about 90 minutes, Rahul Gandhi wrote on social media platform Facebook, "Had an interesting discussion with leaders from the Dalit community this morning. Come rain or shine, we will stay true to our resolve for equal opportunities for all sections of the society. Jai Hind!" Rahul Gandhi’s discussion had clear political overtones. The meeting was a message to Bhartiya Janta Party and Bahujan Samaj Party which had called the decision ‘a dummy appointment by Congress to woo Dalits’. Although the party was left red-faced after Punjab affairs incharge Harish Rawat’s announcement that Navjot Singh Sidhu will be the CM face during elections, but a senior leader in Delhi remarked, "Now it will be tough even for party high command.
