About 10,000 people gheraoed Assam Police, used violence: Assam CM on Dholpur clashes

Guwahati, Sep 24 Speaking about the firing incident which took place at Dholpur village in Assam’s Darrang district on Thursday during an eviction drive, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that about 10,000 people had gheraoed the security personnel and used violence on them. "An eviction drive was initiated with an agreed principle. That landless will be provided 2 acres each as per land policy and representatives [of locals] agreed [to that]. We expected no resistance but about 10,000 people gheraoed Assam Police and used violence. Then police retaliated," Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said. Shots were fire on Thursday when a team of security personnel and district administration officials visited the Dholpur Ghorukhuti area in Darrang's Sipajhar to evict encroachers who were protesting the government action. Some protesters had allegedly hurled stones at the officials and attacked them with sharp weapons. The police had then opened fire in "self-defence.
