Babul Supriyo on quitting BJP: ‘Messi did not want to leave Barcelona, he left with a sad heart’

New Delhi, Sep 21 Asansol MP and former Union minister Babul Supriyo joined Trinamool Congress (TMC) last week, months after he resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party and announced retirement from active politics. His exit from the BJP invited some unusual remarks from the party leaders, who took many a swipe at Babul Supriyo. Dilip Ghosh, who has just lost the post of West Bengal BJP president, had said, “It was not a big blow to the party when he [Babul Supriyo] joined or when he left.” Once even considered an anti-TMC face in West Bengal BJP, Babul Supriyo spoke about his decision to switch to Trinamool Congress in an exclusive interview with India Today TV Consulting Editor Rajdeep Sardesai. Have I created history by shifting parties? What about other people in other states who join the BJP? Some see it as an opportunity[ But this is] a place I have been accepted with love and trust. Where they feel I can contribute. I am not here to enjoy public money and all the perks and doing nothing. All the other leaders who have joined BJP should be asked to go back to their original parties because if they change parties it is seen as ‘political opportunism’. Messi did not want to leave Barcelona. He left with a sad heart. But circumstances were such that he needed to leave for PSG [Paris Saint- Germain Football Club]. He scored against PSG in previous Champions League matches. Now when he is playing for PSG, do you expect him to be in Barcelona’s Nou Camp [home ground] and not score against Barcelona? I do not want my seven years in parliamentarian politics to go to waste. I got a great opportunity from my rivals.
