CHAD PRESIDENT KILLED BY REBEL FORCES

T K NANDANAN It is indeed sad to learn that Chad President IdrissDeby- Itno, who ruled the central African nation for more than three decades, succumbed to the bullet injuries received during a fight against rebels. The sad announcement came just hours after electoral officials had declared Deby the winner of the April 11 presidential election, paving the way for him to stay in power for six more years. It is still not known why the President would have visited the frontlines in northern Chad or participated in the ongoing clashes with the rebels who opposed his rule. Deby came to power in 1990 when his rebel forces overthrew the then-President HisseneHabre. It may be recalled that Deby had survived many armed rebellions and luckily managed to stay in power until this latest insurgency led by a group named the Front for Change and Concord in Chad. Chad is a landlocked country in north-central Africa. It is the fifth largest country on the African continent, but an impoverished country. Most of the population lives by agriculture. But it joined the ranks of oil-producing countries in 2003 raising hopes that the revenues generated would improve the country’s economic situation. It shares its borders with Libya in the north, Niger, Nigeria and Cameroon in the west, Central African Republic in the south and Sudan in the east. Chad is a country torn apart by civil war from 1960. Two guerilla movements emerged in the mid-1960s. HisseneHabre’s Armed Forces recovered the territory in northern Chad that had been under Libyan control and established his regime. Habre continued to face threats from the interior minister, Brahim M.Itno and two key military advisers, Hassan Djamouss and IdrissDeby, who all plotted to overthrow Habre. Later Itno was arrested and Djamouss was killed but Deby escaped and began new attacks a year later. In 1990 Deby’s Movement for Chadian National Salvation forces captured power and Habre fled the country. Deby’s takeover of the government was not without resistance. However, in 1996, a new constitution was approved and Deby was elected president in the first multiparty presidential elections held in Chad’s history. It is pertinent to note that most of the countries in the African continent are facing internal instabilities like civil war, insurgencies etc. In the case of Chad too, Libyan government’s involvement to overthrow the Debygovernment is a pestering issue to pond over. The African continent is comparatively an impoverished continent. None of the countries in the African continent has come out as an economic giant. This continent is always in the news for civil war or insurgency. How can it achieve development without peace and tranquility?
