Former Assam CM Bhumidhar Barman passes away

Guwahati, Apr 19 Former Assam chief minister and senior Congress leader Dr Bhumidhar Barman passed away on Sunday evening at a private hospital in Assam’s Guwahati. The 91-year-old veteran Congress leader was admitted to a private hospital in Guwahati on March 13 due to old-age ailments. He had been on ventilation in the hospital ICU for the past several days. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed condolences on the death of the veteran Congress leader. The chief minister said “Saddened to learn about the demise of former Chief Minister of Assam Dr. Bhumidhar Barman. My sincere condolences to his bereaved family members and well-wishers. Om shanti.” Dr Barman had held chief minister’s post twice, once for a short period between April 22, 1996-May 14, 1996 after the death of then Assam chief minister Hiteshwar Saikia. He was also the acting chief minister in 2010, when the then chief minister Tarun Gogoi was on leave on medical grounds. Barman was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly seven times and had held many important portfolios, including as cabinet minister.
