T K NANDANAN Covid-19 pandemic has literally held the country to ransom as it ravaged the country with infections soaring daily to new heights. Last Sunday alone the coronavirus tested positive cases stood at 2.61 lakh, which is the highestever daily spike of Covid-19. The daily positivity rate in the past 12 days has doubled from eight percent to 16.69 per cent, while the fatalities due to the virus in the past 24 hours were 1501. Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday wrote to PM Narendra Modi suggesting several ways to fight the Covid-19 pandemic in the country. Singh wrote, “We must resist the temptation to look at absolute numbers vaccinated and instead focus on the percentage of population vaccinated.” Manmohan Singh also wrote that the states should be given some flexibility to define categories of frontline workers who can be vaccinated even if they are below 45 years of age. As the Covid case surges, health experts have said the second wave of the deadly virus is proving lethal to the younger people who are showing entirely different symptoms such as dry mouth, gastrointestinal issues, nausea, loose stools, red eyes and headache. Besides, the double mutant of the coronavirus which can’t be detected by the Covid-19 RTPCR test has symptoms such as sore throat and fatigue. Other symptoms, which were not very common among the Covid-19 patients in India last year, are being reported with greater frequencies. In light of the covid cases increasing in the country, the government should take good and practical steps to fight the pandemic. Now it is to be admitted that the country is waging a war on the pandemic and the war-like situation is so decisive in containing the pandemic and everyone is expected to cooperate with the government to eradicate the coronavirus from our country. At this time of emergency, all of us need to support the government that must be alert and attentive to the grave situation. Shortage of vaccines and other medical equipment is a major problem the country is facing now. When the Covid cases multiply, the government needs to find more beds, frontline workers, oxygen and other medical equipment. Last year, the coronavirus cases were comparatively low but now things are different. The country needs to take precautions in pace with the surge of the coronavirus. Let us all join hands with the government and prepare to fight the coronavirus, because this is a serious and critical situation and any laxity from our part can help coronavirus spread to more people. So, everyone has a role to play in this mega battle and put our trust in the hope of winning the battle against coronavirus. Yes, together we shall overcome the Covid-19 pandemic.
