DONATE ORGAN, SAVE A LIFE: DR KACHROO

Dr SL Kachroo, Joint Director of State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organistaion during an interaction with Young Bites correspondent Pooja Thakur explain the functioning of organization. Q. What is organ donation? Dr: Basically, our body is made up of several organs. Whenever an organ is damaged due to injury or infection and the body as well as medicines is unable to treat that organ so as doctors we have to remove it. But in order to keep body normal we have to replace the damaged organ. The organ can be a heart, liver, kidney, eyes etc. We can transplant tissues, ligaments, bones and some organs as well. But the million dollar question is that from where we will get the new organ. For this we need a donor. After death our family, relatives and friends have to dispose of the body and so the organs goes useless. It is better to donate them so that someone gets a new life. During accidents, some people are brought dead whereas some people stop breathing in hospitals. In such cases, if family wants, they can donate the organs to the needy people. But it is tough time for the family to decide. Everyone has a Right to choose; we cannot force them or judge them on the basis of their decision. Q. What is the work of State Organ and Tissue Organisation? Dr: We are working on bringing awareness among masses to take part in organ donation camps. Nowadays, many people are registering with us for organ donation in case of any mis-happening. They can pledge to donate organ but still at the time of mis-happening their guardians can decide whatever they want to do. We are organizing conferences, seminars and meets to aware people. Recently, many NGOs and schools have joined our camps in which interactive sessions were organized.
