Mumbai, Feb 23 A21-year-old was arrested by the Kalyan police in Thane district of Maharashtra on Monday for allegedly killing his aunt and injuring his mother during an engagement party. While the aunt of the accused died on the spot, his mother is admitted to a hospital in Kalyan. Police said an unidentified assailant fired at Suvarna Ghode, 36, and Bharti Mhatre,40, during an engagement party on Sunday at Saparde village in Kalyan. As the assailant fired at Ghode, Mhatre tried to save her but also sustained a bullet wound injury as she tried to save the other woman. Police said the accused took advantage of loud music being played at the event to target the woman and later fled the spot. Following the incident, police called Mhatre's son Pawan for interrogation. Pawan tried to make the crime appear like a robbery gone wrong and claimed that he was also hit by assailants and had fainted, police said. Police, however, found several discrepancies in his statement and questioned him further. Pawan broke down and confessed that he was behind the attack on Ghode and his mother. He told police that he was in an illicit relationship with his aunt Suvarna Ghode, which he claimed the woman had called off.
