Police busts online 'sextortion' racket, 3 arrested

Mumbai, Feb 23 Mumbai Police on Monday busted a 'sextortion' racket that had been targeting personalities including politicians and bureaucrats. The Mumbai Police crime branch arrested three people from Rajasthan, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh, who were allegedly involved with the racket. According to the police, the gang used as many as 171 fake Facebook profiles to trap their victims. According to the police, the accused used to befriend the victims on social media platforms and then persuade the victim to connect via video calls on weekends. According to the police, the accused streamed porn on the video calls recorded the actions of the victims. The recorded video call was then used to blackmail the victim for money. Initially, the accused used to demand a sum of Rs 2,000-Rs 5,000 and later, they started demanding lakhs.
