Mumbai, Feb 23 In a bid to under the behaviour of leopards and mitigate the chances of human-animal conflict, the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) on Tuesday successfully radio-collared and released a male leopard into the forest. Named, ‘Maharaj’, the adult leopard is about six years of age and the second leopard to be radio-collared after ‘Savitri’, who was released earlier into the wild after having been radio-collared. Savitri was released into the jungle on February 20. The SGNP has radio-collared the leopard to study their movements to have a better understanding of the animal. Leopard is considered a very secretive wild animal and not much is known about its wildlife behaviour. SGNP Conservator of Forests and Director G Mallikarjuna said the radio collars were being mounted on the leopards to "understand them better and to implement better conservation models for their protection”. “This work will be done in collaboration with Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) — India and Wildlife Conservation Trust. It is supported by Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies (RNP) and the Reliance F o u n d a t i o n , ” Mallikarjuna added. A total of five leopards, three female and two male.
