Mumbai, Feb 21 Aseven-day long total lockdown has been imposed in Amravati city as well as Achalpur town in Amravati district due to a large number of coronavirus patients. Meanwhile, a partial lockdown has been imposed in five districts including Amravati, Akola, Buldhana, Washim and Yavatmal. The announcement was made by guardian minister Yashomati Thakur in a press conference on Sunday afternoon. Amravati Divisional Commissioner said, "Except essential services, like medicine shops, hospitals and grocery shops, other business activity will have to be shut down from 5 pm to 9 am. However, the Amaravati city will be observing total lockdown for the next 7 days." Meanwhile, a night curfew 11 pm to 5 am has been imposed in Nashik from February 22 to March 1. Those not wearing a mask will be fined Rs 1,000, said Nashik's guardian minister Chhagan Bhujbaj. Earlier this week, a weekend lockdown was imposed in Amravati. On February 18, the District Magistrate Shailesh Naval had announced a complete lock-down from Saturday morning to Monday morning. On Friday, all establishments will close at 8 pm, the DM had said. “We urge people to follow the Covid-19 rules or we will be forced to take action against them,” Shailesh Naval had said on Thursday. On 20 February, Maharashtra recorded 6,281 new cases and 40 Covid-19 deaths. There are fears that a new strain of the virus might have entered the state too. On Thursday, an official had said that researchers had found two new mutations in coronavirus samples from Amravati and Yavatmal districts, but no foreign strain of the virus was found. More samples from these areas have now been sent to Pune for further testing of genome sequencing. The final sample reports are still awaited from the National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune. Earlier, authorities in Pune announced a night curfew in the city.
