Life has ups and downs, don’t commit suicide: Dr Rakesh

Dr Rakesh Banal, Psychiatry Consultant, Government Medical College during an interaction with Young Bites correspondent Pooja Thakur discusses the reason behind suicides. Q. Why do people commit suicide? Dr: According to reports, approximately 8 million suicide cases register every year worldwide in which 17% of the cases are from India. Nowadays 11 persons are suicidal in every 1 lakh which is 6 persons/ lac in 1990. The suicide cases are increasing rapidly. The suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in young people ages 15 to 29. The reason behind suicide is stress, a person who is unable to bear the stress; find an easy way to avoid it and that is suicide. The main reasons of suicide are mental illness, depression, anxiety, schizophrenia etc. In our society talking about mental illness is a taboo. If someone is talking about mental illness is termed as insane. Other reason of suicide is physical illness; those who are in chronic pain attempt suicide. There are also some social issues which led someone to suicide are job or study stress, relationship and domestic problems etc. Q. How do we prevent suicide? Dr: Those who are going through a mental breakdown are advised to spend time with their loved ones and do whatever they like. Nowadays we are suffering from Post-COVID stress, anxiety and insomnia; as a consultant I want to advise all the age groups to opt healthy lifestyle and meditate daily which helps them to manage their stress levels. Talk to parents and focus on your hobbies. One should know how to express your feelings, suppressing your emotions is often bad. According to study, a person who is in mental breakdown always tries to express his/her feeling but due to lack of confidence is not as much expressive. It is our duty to be in touch with our friends and relatives and when someone is behaving unusual or abnormal please figure it out, maybe you can save someone’s life, Dr Rajesh added.
