FOCUSSING ON SKILL
Sir Through the column of your esteemed daily newspaper I would like to suggest Govt of India and Jammu-Kashmir to revise their concept about education. We should come out of the lack of literary mentality. Literacy is not the problem but lack of skill development is the actual problem. I wonder why our educationists especially those involved in syllabus design and implementation are ignorant of current educational philosophy or trend in the world. Instead of completing the syllabus a pet but out model phrase used at all levels of education which is essentially devoid of all purposes. We should focus on teaching life skills besides developing social and technical skills among students for use according to their age groups. We need to lessen the burden of extra-conceptual subjects in primary classes and should rather focus on building language skill in English, Urdu and even foreign ones besides polishing Math skills for future technical training .All other subjects should be replaced by minimum theory and maximum practical training in personal discipline, computer skills on actual computers ,first aid, critical thinking and some basic information about Indian Geography and culture. I wonder at the genius behind the adoption of computer textbooks starting from the first grade in all private and state schools. I have seen young children in villages that have never even seen an actual computer trying desperately to learn its operations and functioning by rote even up to the intermediate level. When they cannot answer the teacher’s questions in class they are punished. This kind of pedantic mentality has resulted in hordes of unskilled workers in whom no technology company interested. Last but not least I also wonder why we do not learn from educational success of countries like America for a purposeful overhaul of the educational system of relying on hollow slogans and purposeless pedagogy for our future generations. Yours etc..... Mool Raj R/O Bhagota (Revera) Panjsoo
