SC's INTERVENTION: CENTER VRS FARMERS

The farmers protest has going on since August last year when demonstrations and protests were organised on a relatively smaller scale in various different parts of the country which gradually and eventually took shape of a massive nation-wide movement lead by the farmers against the central government with a demand to repeal the three new farming laws which were just introductory bills against which the protests had initially started. There are two sides to the current situation, one in support of the government and the new farm laws whilst the other firmly opposing the laws. Where the government presents the laws as much required reforms in favor of the agriculture and farming sector, the protesting farmers and unions have accused it as a threat to the livelihood with the fear that it may lead to elimination of the provision for MSP in future. Even after centre's response on the same, assuring that the laws are in no way meant to repeal the Minimum Selling Price of the crops or other commodities bought from the farmers, numerous farmer unions have insisted the center for written assurance ensuring that the MSP which is meant to support the farmers must never be repealed. Numerous rounds of talks between the farmer unions and the central government have failed to provide any substantial outcome. Farmers from around the country have been protesting in an astonishingly peaceful and organised manner, persist ant to fight for their rights even during such harsh cold winters prevailjng throughout the capital. Witnessing intense protests at such a scale, poked by the innumerable PILs concerning the same, The Supreme Court of India decided to intervened in this matter, hopeful towards a way out of this endless tussle between the center and the farmers. Ordering the central government to put the three laws on hold has been appreciated as the much required vital step in an effort to resolve this dispute. This way a balance is ensured by the highest judicial entity of the country, ensuring that justice is served to all. Holding the laws for the time being will surely help in improving the status of the ongoing meetings between the two sides besides ensuring that both sides are heard and understood rightfully in this matter. Recommendation to setup a committee was also directed by the Supreme Court to resolve this matter as soon as possible, foreseen as an initiative to end the protests which have affected the lives of hundreds and thousands of farmers and their families, claiming the lives of many farmers primarily due to health concerns amidst the protests or the case of suicides. Greatfully the protests were ensured to be mostly peaceful and non violent which deserves much appreciation by everyone at a national as well as international level, setting a benchmark for the protests throughout the globe. Where the world is witnessing more and more violent protests and demonstrations in some of the most powerful nations, India farmers have showcased an example for them all.
