India bowlers stare at unwanted record after Sydney horror show

New Delhi, Nov 29 It was carnage in Sydney for the second successive time. India bowlers looked pedestrian for the second successive time in the ongoing ODI series against Australia. India ended up conceding 389 runs in the 2nd ODI on Sunday, the highest score by Australia in ODIs against their archrivals, days after leaking 374 in the 1st ODI. By virtue of an ordinary performance, India are staring at an unwanted record as they will be ending up the worst bowling average for the opening wicket of an opposition. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Navdeep Saini struggled as India needed 23 overs to pick up their first wicket. India have played 8 ODIs so far in 2020 and they have the worst bowling average for the first wicket -- 125.42 -- which means they have conceded 125 runs on an average before picking up the first opposition wicket. Even if India manage to get a wicket without conceding a run in the third and final ODI on Wednesday, they will end up with the worst bowling average for the opening wicket in a calendar year. The next worst team on this list is Kenya in 2001 as they had a bowling average for the first wicket of 104.37 in 2001. Bangladesh are next on the list with 96 in 1997 followed by Zimbabwe (84.83 in 2000). India let Australia stitch an opening stand of 142 in the 2nd ODI on Sunday, days after David Warner and Aaron Finch added 156 for the 1st wicket in the 1st ODI. The duo brought up their 5th hundred- run opening stand.
