Efficient marketing management will empower farmers: VC SKAUST-J

Jammu, Oct 20 Vice Chancellor, Sher-e- Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J), Prof. J.P. Sharma visited Sirah village of Reasi district on Monday and interacted with farm women of the area. An interaction programme was organised by KVK, Reasi in the village by following all the SOPs under COVID-19 pandemic. During his address to the women farmers, Prof. Sharma laid emphasis upon the value addition and efficient marketing management in the agricultural sector. He spoke on grading, packaging and branding of agricultural products. He further advised that that value addition of fruits, vegetables, medicinal and aromatic plants, adoption of protected cultivation, organic agriculture and diversification in agriculture can enhance the income and employment among the farmers. He also spoke on women empowerment and stressed for establishment of processing- cum- value addition units at rural level. He narrated that strenuous efforts are needed for the Atmanirbhar Bharat so that the rural people can be empowered. He explained how farmers can get good price for their produce by grading, packaging and best marketing practices. He emphasised on establishment of Farmers’ Producer Organization (FPOs) with marketing linkages for the farmers’ prosperity. He also spoke on the horizontal expansion of the agricultural technologies for the betterment of the farming community. Poona Sehrawat, an expert spoke on the value addition in marigold flowers. She said that the fresh flowers are used in the religious spots and after their use they are thrown away as a waste. She educated the farm women on the processing of marigold flowers. She narrated that different types of organic products can be made from the floral parts of marigold which have a great market demand. She discussed in detail on recycling process of flowers and encouraged women farmers for the processing of marigold flowers.
