Port Elizabeth, Jan 20 Even though South Africa fell to a disappointing innings defeat to England in Port Elizabeth on Monday, the hosts were able to provide some sort of resistance to the opposition before conceding an innings and 53 runs defeat to Joe Root's team. After being forced to follow-on, South Africa resumed Day 5 at 102/6 - still 188 runs behind making England bat again. The next 3 wickets fell quickly but Keshav Maharaj forged a 99-run last-wicket stand with Dane Paterson and carved out a slice of history of his own. In the 82nd over of the innings, Maharaj launched launched Joe Root for 20 runs off the 1st 5 balls before the bowler conceded 4 byes off the last ball to take the over tally to 28. 4,4,4,6,6,4b - read the scoreboard in that over, equalling the record of the most expensive over in Test history. 4 4 4 6 6 4byes Absolute carnage from Keshav Maharaj in Joe Root's 29th over # S A v E N G pic.twitter.com/nLf4CfxoPj ICC (@ICC) January 20, 2020 Curiously, Joe Root was the most successful England bowler in South Africa's 2nd innings with 4 wickets to his name on the 4th day. But within a span of a few hours, he also finds his name in the above infamous recordlist. Maharaj was the last man out for South Africa, falling one run short of his highest Test score of 72. The 99-run 10th wicket stand was also the highest for the last wicket at Port Elizabeth before Maharaj's run out brought an end to the match. His batting partner Paterson remained unbeaten on 39 off 40 balls as England celebrated Sam Curran's direct- hit which found Maharaj short of the crease.
