Jammu has got its first international Cricket Stadium. Lieutenant Governor, Girish Chandra Murmu yesterday inaugurated the renovated Maulana Azad Cricket Stadium. Maulana Azad Stadium has been upgraded under the Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP). Around Rs 40 cr have been spent out of the Rs 200 Cr earmarked for sports infrastructure and rest of the amount would be spent for developing sports facilities all over the UT. Apart from cricket, other sports like football, Hockey, Volleyball, and Athletics etc also need attention and various projects are going on to develop facilities for the sports earlier played in the said stadium. In the current time, when most of the kids stick to their mobiles and other gadgets, sports plays important role in the holistic development, it is important for physical, social, and emotional health of kids and brings discipline in their lives. J&K Youth have brought laurels to the UT at various national and international events. There is no dearth to talent in J&K, but due to lack of sports facilities, youth of J&K were suffering. But with the opening of Cricket Stadium, J&K will be able to produce players which can compete with National players so that they compete and get selected at international level. People of J&K have immense love for sports, there are various sports development projects underway and many more being in the pipeline. So it is indeed good news for sports lovers. The stadium has been upgraded as per Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) norms and the Stadium would be an ideal one in accordance to promote sports in J&K. The new stadium developed exclusively for Cricket activities will have the international standards sports facilities like high tower flood lights, enhanced pavilion and sitting arrangements. There are many other stadiums in various other districts of J&K, but their condition is pathetic. Every one cannot move to cities for learning the skills. As such the need of time is to fully develop and equip other stadiums also, so that the people staying in far flung areas could get sports facility nearby. The youth in village have lot of potential, but due to lack of facilities their talent remains unnoticed. Schemes and policies should be framed for the development of playgrounds at every village in the UT.
