BHARAT BHUSHAN
Jammu, July 11 Jammu—the city of temples and winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir— is a beautiful city situated on hillock along River Tawi. The city gives a clean and beautiful mesmerizing look after rainfall but from past over some years some of its areas have become flood prone courtesy partial encroachment of khads and nallah by land grabbers. As the Monsoon has knocked the door of Jammu and Kashmir and in other parts of the country it has wreaked havoc similar scenes are expected to take place here also as administration has miserably failed to retrieve land encroached by land grabbers putting a blockade in the flow of the rain water through natural nallahs and khads. These chunks of land has been encroached upon by land grabbers at different places in connivance with the officials of the revenue department. The land of khads and nallahs is specifically indicated in the revenue records notwithstanding these people have succeeded in encroaching upon which was not possible without the leniency and ignorance of the revenue department. But why revenue officials ignored when these nallahs and khads were being encroached, is a million dollar question. Jammu has a very unique topography. It has mountains and plains as well. The rain water from mountains flow through nallahs and khads towards the plains in Jammu and these blockades are posing a great threat to the lives and properties of the people. One can see houses and buildings inside the embankment of river Tawi right from Sidhra to Belicharana. These building have been raised under the nose of the administration which was ignored by those at the helm of affairs at the time to their construction. Similarly, other Khads and Nallahs were also encroached upon and their width has been limited to few feet from yards some of them were in 100s. The district administrations of the valley have so far retrieved 78937 kanals of Kahcharai and 48896 kanals of State land from the illegal occupants but it seems that Jammu administration is still waiting for a major tragedy to happen. Act before it gets late!
