Make women aware about their rights: Sughanda Mahajan

Sughanda Mahajan a former cop and now Assistant Professor in Department of Botany, GDC Gandhi Nagar, Jammu in conversation with Young Bites correspondent Pooja Thakur on women empowerment Q. How you feel after getting selected for second government job? SM: I feel so proud because nowadays getting a government job is as difficult as to bring stars down on earth. I am lucky enough that I managed to get through the KAS exams and was selected as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) in Jammu and Kashmir Police Department. Serving with the police department was a wonderful experience as you have to discharge your duties round the clock. But my inclination was towards teaching profession for which I had applied for the post of Assistant Professor while I was undergoing training for DySP but unfortunately the vacancies were put on hold following some litigation. As soon as the court gave a nod to go ahead I received a call for interview. I attended the interview and got selected as Assistant Professor in Botany but I was little confused to join as Assistant Professor as I was serving as DySP in J&K police at that point of time. Finally my family and I decided to quit police service and join as teaching profession. Q. Which profession you liked most teaching or policing? SM: Some things in life can’t be compared. While serving as police officer is different thing and teaching students is different thing. I enjoyed a lot while serving with the police department as I learned lot of things from my seniors and colleagues. It was a different experience for me but iN teaching profession one has to be updated with current affairs, general knowledge and moreover latest buzz and feeds. Q. One message for youth on how to study? SM: Study thoroughly; one should have to remain focused on what he/she has to study even though civil services exams don’t have a defined study material. Q. After much efforts women are not still empowered, why? SM: Women living in towns are empowered socially as well as financially but we forget about women living in rural areas. Women can only be empowered if they start helping each other. Women have to be made aware regarding their rights at grass root level. Until we do this women in India cannot be empowered
