ER ABHA GUPTA Jammu, Jun 21 No one wants to live in slums, but everyone wants to visit slums to see the way people live under tiny roofs. Dharavi is a locality in Mumbai, considered to be one of world's largest slums. Dharavi has an area of just over 2.1 square kilometers and a population of about 700,000. Dharavi is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Most of the foreigners love to visit the places like Dharavi. The place attracts tourist because they want to know the way the people of Dharavi live. Dharavi in itself is self sufficient, there are sort of small business establishments, small factories manufacture almost everything the people of slums need. That is the reason it is a choice of travelers. Travel site TripAdvisor has announced the winners for the year 2019. To a surprise in the top 10 Asian countries, slums of Dharavi took the tenth place and the Wonders of the World, Taj Mahal is not in the top 10 list. The awards recognize the world, Asia and India’s top bookable experiences - tours and activities - as decided by travelers. Small group tour to Dharavi Slum in Mumbai has topped the list of destinations for “Travellers’ Choice Experiences 2019- India”. In fact, spending a few hours in Dharavi Slum, which is one of the largest slums of Asia, has also featured in the “top 10 Travellers’ Choice Experiences 2019- World and Asia”. This shows that experiencing the local culture of a destination is one of the most exciting parts of a trip. Dharavi is considered one of the largest slums in the world. The low-rise building style and narrow street structure of the area make Dharavi very cramped and confined. Like most slums, it is overpopulated. Compared to Mumbai's urban floor space index (FSI) of a range from 5 to 15, in Dharavi it is about 13.3. Government officials are considering changing the Dharavi's floor space index to 4. Despite the expensive Mumbai lifestyle, Dharavi provides a cheap alternative where rent is as low as Rs.1000 per month. The Dharavi slum was founded in 1883 during the British colonial era, and grew in part because of an expulsion of factories and residents from the peninsular city
centre by the colonial government, and from the migration
of poor rural Indians into urban Mumbai. For this reason,
Dharavi is currently a highly multi-religious, multiethnic,
and diverse settlement.
