* Can give respite from rising mercury in hot cities like Jammu.

ER ABHA GUPTA Jammu, June 13 The temperature is at an alarming rise in most of the parts of northern India. In Jammu too people are witnessing above 44 Degree Celsius these days. There is no control on rising temperature but there can be innovative ideas that can help in lowering the rise in mercury. One such innovative idea has been implemented by Delhi Govt. to overcome rising temperatures and pollution. That innovative idea is VERTICAL GARDEN. The vertical gardens are the gardens build vertically making the best use of available space. In Delhi there are many flyovers and under these flyovers are the pillars. On these thousands of pillars are beautiful vertical gardens. Not only these gardens look trendy, but they are helping in cleansing the air. The once cemented pillars are now covered with a mesh frame, where tiny plants are mounted to give it a classic look In fact, a four-storey high vertical garden can remove 130 grams of particulates from the air, filter 40 tonnes of greenhouse gases and process over 15 kg of harmful heavy metals. These gardens will surely help in purifying the air. The site of vertical gardens are not only worth watching and give soothing effect on eyes, but they are major environment purifiers also. The same idea should be implemented in the state of J&K also because in the current situation where everybody is showing concern over rising temperatures, these vertical Gardens will definitely help in overcoming global warming. The plants in the vertical garden are grown without soil using hydroponics, where they are supplied required nutrients in the right quantity through the water. Hydroponics uses 90 percent less water than conventional soil-based methods and requires low maintenance. So keeping in mind that Vertical Gardens are one time investments, the authorities should implement this innovative way to overcome the current environment crisis.
