Most of the Indians are tea lovers. We consume tea even when the mercury goes at its peak high. The health conscious people are green tea lovers too. Earlier the tea bags dipped in hot water carried a stapler to tie the string with the tea bag, we all drank that tea without giving a single thought about the hazards associated with the stapler dipping in the hot water.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has been implementing several changes, which have led to higher standards in food safety and quality in the country. In July 2017, a circular was issued by the FSSAI banning tea manufacturers from using stapler pins in tea bags. The circular read, “Taking cognisance of the risk to public safety in using staple pins in tea bags by some FBOs, the Food Authority in exercise of the power conferred under Section 16 (5) of FSS Act, 2006, hereby directs the concerned FBOs to discontinue the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import of stapled tea bags by January 1, 2018.”
The notification was issued due to a concern that any loose staple pins used in making tea may be inadvertently ingested by a consumer, leading to serious health implications for them. In response to the notification, FBOs had also raised the issue of high costs of producing staple-less tea bags. FBOs had cited the costs involved in switching to staple-less packing machines and the problem of unavailability of these machines as there are a very few manufacturers for these machines, around the world.
But with the problems come the solutions! Abacus Tea (Pvt) Ltd presented a ground breaking invention, making Constanta tea bag machines staple free, at the Hilton Colombo recently. The breakthrough is an invention by tea bag industry veteran and Abacus Tea (Pvt) Ltd Chairman, Rohan De Lanerolle, who will give a new lease of life to over 1,000 tea bag machines operating around the world.
Senior Marketing Vice President of JV Gokal India, the global agent of Abacus Tea, Sachen Verma said that India is faced with a situation where the FSSAI is banning the use of staples in domestic marketing at the end of June, which has made the industry look to options close to home and feels that this low cost innovation, achieved by Rohan De Lanerolle, will help these machines to enter the future.
Do you still find stapler in tea bags? If yes, then you can write to the FSSAI and lodge a formal complaint.
