Education is the only key to success of an individual, a village, a state and a country. The states with high literacy rate have witnessed massive development and low crime rate. In Jammu and Kashmir too the government is keen to promote education among poor and downtrodden but there seems some mismanagement in handling the education department.
The government is paying handsome salaries to the teachers in the education department as they are well qualified and have been selected after a tough recruitment process to ensure that the children may get quality education. The student –teacher ratio in Government run schools has been a constant topic for discussion by professionals.
According to a study conducted by correspondent of Youngbites, Government Girls High School (GGHS), Rajpura Mangotrian has 35 teachers for 150 students. 35 teachers for 150 students are too much. If we calculate the average salary of teacher @Rs 50,000/- then the total salary bill of this particular school is Rs 1750000/-(Seventeen lakh and fifty thousand only), Whereas, the result of this school is around 35 to 40 per cent only. If we compare it with any of the private school which pays very meager salary to teachers, the number of teachers may not have exceeded more than 8.
Similar is the situation in Government Girls Higher Secondary School (GGHSS), Bakshi Nagar, where the total strength of the staff is 48 against 110 students including 14 lecturers, 21 Teachers/Masters, 2 Sports teachers, 2 lab assistants, 4 peons and 5 members of the clerical staff. On an average salary of Rs 50000/- per member it costs government Rs 2400000/- (Twenty four lakh) a month to run this school besides other expenses. The school is spread over 10 kanals of land. To continue with another example the condition of Government Boys Higher Secondary School (GBHSS) Bakshi Nagar is too similar which has staff strength of 36 against 170 students including 17 Lecturers, 11 Masters/Teachers, 2 Sports teachers, 3 Lab Assistants and 3 members of the clerical staff. At the same time there are certain schools in the remote areas which lacks staff strength, whereas, the number of students is very high there which is badly hampering the smooth conduct of the schools. The government and the education department must ensure the proper student-teacher ratio for quality education. The high number of teachers and low number of student also promotes idle waging which is the loss of the state exchequer. Please make proper utilization of taxpayers’ money.
