Though, the Traffic Department has issued an advisory and directed the bus and mini-bus operators to give 50 per cent concession to the students, but still some of the bus operators failed to obey the order issued, continuing harassing the student community.
As per the order issued, all bus operators, both private and state-owned, had been directed to charge only 50 per cent of the passenger fare from students while traveling from their residential place to the location of their educational institution and back once in a day.
“The students have been asked to produce a valid identity card of the institution in which they are studying to avail the benefit,” the official said.
“Necessary action shall be taken under the Motor Vehicles Act if the directive was flouted,” the order said.
“The bus operators are not giving concessions in bus fare. As per rules 50% fare concessions are mandatory for students holding the identity cards, but the bus operators ignore us clearly and refuse to give us any concessions. The bus operators did not stop the buses whenever we wanted to get ride,” said Sudhir Sharma, a college student.
“The fare concessions are our right, as a number of students belong to far off areas and used to attend the college daily, while travelling in mini buses and buses. In order to get concession we have to take a verbal dual with the bus operators, who always harass us and never obliged the order issued by the government,” he further added.
“We wanted to make an appeal to the officials of the Transport Department to take action against such Bus operators, so that the needy students should get the justice and can travel smoothly in the buses and mini-buses without any verbal dual daily,” said Ruhi Singh, a student leader from Gandhi Nagar Women College.
