Few months ago it was announced that a person seeking a new mobile connection no longer need an Aadhaar and it was preferred that telecom companies would now also accept other documents like passport, driving licence and voter ID, with the Centre reportedly directing them immediately implement a new rule to this effect.
But Surprisingly in Jammu and Kashmir are not issuing new connections unless the customer is forced for submitting the Aadhar card as a valid identity proof for providing mobile connections.
Citing the reference of Apex court Ex Dy A.G. Dinesh Singh Jamwal said that the Supreme Count five-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra on March 14 issued an interim order indefinitely extending the deadline for linking Aadhaar to bank accounts, mobile phone numbers, passports and other services, beyond the previous deadline of March 31.
But flouting the order of Apex Court the telecom operators are still asking for Aadhar card prior to issuing of new mobile connection is illegal and can’t be justified in any manner. The telecom operators in state must justify a reason.
It is pertinent to mention here that the telecom operators had started accepting Aadhaar for mobile connections in 2016, they have again started asking for driving licence, voter card or some other proof of identity from November this year
Even the government departments, which have started biometric attendance on the basis of Aadhaar cards, have never listed it as a proof of identity.
The department of telecom on October 26 this year had instructed not to accept the Aadhaar card as the proof of identity.
Talking to Young Bites correspondent several customers said that we are facing problem in getting connections as many of them do not have driving licence and most of the voter cards have incomplete address on it.
Defence personnel working in the state were affected the most as Aadhaar was no longer being accepted as the proof of identity by the telecom operators. Defence personnel form a large customer base of the telecom operators in Jammu and Kashmir.
Telecom operators said as they could not accept the service card of defence personnel due to security reasons, Aadhaar was the most convenient document available with them.
