Well equipped infrastructure for open heart surgeries in Jammu: Dr Puja
* People think open heart surgeries cannot be done in Jammu
* We have bypass machines, done 300 successful open heart surgeries
* Govt. pays Rs 1 lakh for open heart surgeries of kids

Dr Puja Vimesh is Head, Cardiac-Anesthesia in Super Specialty Hospital. Firstly she explains the reason of writing Vimesh in her name. She says that she is the only daughter of her parents. Her mother name is Vina and her father name is Ramesh, and her father combined both the names and gave that name to her as her last name.
While remembering her life down the lane she says that 40 years back, birth of a girl was not welcomed, and when she was born her grandmother was not happy, she was born in SMGS Hospital and that time after her birth and when her grandmother came to know that a girl was born, she left the hospital and her mother was left alone in the hospital. But to everybody’s surprise her grandfather came in the hospital very happily and welcomed the birth of Goddess Laxmi. Later her father also joined and brought beautiful frocks for her. She says that her grandmother loved and cared her father more than her aunts(Father’s sisters).
Remembering her school days, she says that that time they had two options, either doctor or engineer, and her mother always wanted her to be a doctor. She says that her father gave all facilities to them but with a condition that his children will study hard. And that’s what she did for her father, she studied very hard to achieve our goal.
She herself is a mother of two beautiful daughters. She is married in a Rajput family. In many Rajput families daughters are not welcome, but in her family this kind of notion do not exist.
She says that after her MBBS, she got posted in Kathua, where due to lack of infrastructure many times they had worked in candle light and examined their patients in candle light. She did her MD from Chennai. After her studies she again joined in Bishnah but still the working conditions were same after 5 years.
After MD she did her training of two years from Chennai in cardiac anesthesia. She says that heart patients are very fragile, and they also know the steps of surgeries which are done by surgeons.
She feels that people of state always feel that for big heart surgeries Jammu is not appropriate.
She says, “People of state go to other states for heart surgeries. But as a matter of fact there are bypass machines in the hospital and till date about 300 surgeries have been done. But still many people of state think that in Jammu big heart surgeries cannot be done. But this is not true. We feel bad that after so much struggle people do not acknowledge us . I have done MD from outside state, most of specialized faculty has done training from outside state. But still people have more faith on out of state doctors”.
“Children with heart problems are mostly congenital right from birth, and govt. pays Rs 1 lakh for open heart surgeries for kids. There are so many small kids who are undergoing open heart surgeries. The parents keep faith in us and hand over their children to us and it is our duty to give our best to cure that child”, she adds.
One advice she gives to old people this winter is to be properly covered, not to go out if not necessary and old people should not skip their medicines.
