In spite of the claims by the authorities to provide basic and state of art health care facilities, much needed to diagnose the seriousness of various ailments , the two premier health institutes Super Specialty Hospital and Government Medical college & Hospital located in the heart of Jammu city lacks fibro scan facility.
As a result of non availability of fibro scan, patients suffer immensely and are left with no alternate rather than to pay heavy amount to the private laboratories.
Talking to Young Bites correspondent Advocate Vikas Suri said that it is unethical to keep hospitals without these facilities, as doctors nowadays cannot deal with patients without these breakthrough devices. Fibro scan is used to

estimate the degree of liver damage, monitor disease progression and predict survival in patients with liver disease.
He added that the gadget has replaced liver biopsy, which has important sample error issues, subjectivity in interpretation and real risk of complications, like bleeding. As fatty liver is most common and is spreading like epidemic, for the patients suffering with liver diseases fibro scan is the gold standard for detecting early fibrosis in them and providing an opportunity to change their lifestyle and prevent further progression of the disease.
It is pertinent to mention here that fibro Scan is principally used to estimate the degree of liver scarring present (ie. stage of liver disease). This is very useful in the assessment of patients with chronic liver disease, including chronic hepatitis C, chronic hepatitis B, chronic alcohol abuse and fatty liver. The concept is that as more fibrosis and scarring occur, the higher the liver stiffness reading will be.
Talking to Young Bites correspondent a patient suffering from Hepatitis said that he is suffering from Hepatitis –C and the treatment along with medication and diagnosis is very expensive. Fibro scan diagnosis is required after regular interval of checkups as such it establishes the presence of fibrosis or cirrhosis with chronic liver disease.
He further added that it is unfortunate that state government has failed to provide this facility in either of the premier institutes of Jammu.
Talking to Young Bites Correspondent Dr Arun Sharma Medical Superintendent Super Specialty Hospital Jammu categorically refused the availability of facility in the Super Specialty hospital, Jammu.
The position of premier Government Medical College & Hospital, Jammu is not much different. On a visit by Young Bites Correspondent to the GMC & H, a doctor on condition of anonymity said that there is no such facility of fibro scan in the hospital
He further added that authorities must do something for the patient suffering from various ailments related to liver as the equipment is accurate, safe and results are instantaneous so clinicians can make decisions quickly and merely providing free checkup is not going to help the patients much, as medication is also too expensive.
It is pertinent to mention here that this technology can be used to evaluate patients with breast cancer, prostate cancer and other diseases in which fibrosis play an important role
