Homework is a challenging task for most students. There must be few who would want to sacrifice sleep to complete assignments. But nowadays students have to burn midnight hours to complete their homework.
In spite of the latest order from HRD ministry to all states last month, for reducing the stress of home work, several schools in Jammu are not adhering to the said order. It is worthwhile to mention here that, in a recent notification, the Ministry of Hu man Resource
and Development di rected all states that there should be no homework for classes up to Class II, but these directions are not being followed in Jammu schools. The state education department has adopted lenient approach towards the order and parents said schools were not serious about the personality development of children, resulting of overburden by homework.
As per these instructions, in which the schools have been asked to comply with, institutions cannot assign homework to students of classes I and II. “Schools should not prescribe any other subjects except language and mathematics for classes I and II and language, EVS and mathematics for classes III to V students as prescribed by the NCERT,” the order said.
Students should not be asked to bring additional books, extra materials and the weight of a school bag should not exceed the prescribed limit, the order added. The weight of school bags for students of classes I and II should not exceed 1.5 kg, while the school bag of students of class III to V should weigh between 2 kg to 3 kg.
Talking to Young Bites correspondent Ex. Dy.A.G Dinesh Singh Jamwal said that homework is a set of tasks assigned to students by their teachers to be completed outside the class. Homework may include a variety of tasks like reading, writing, solving the maths problems. However, given the increasing levels of stress associated with school, the effect of homework has been debated.
He further added that the concerned authorities should formulate some policy as per the HRD order and issue circular to all the private as well as government schools so that stress level of homework on the students can be reduced to a greater extent.
