Chhath is an ancient Hindu Vedic festival native to the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh. In Jammu most of the labour class is from these states as a result now the scenes of Chhath puja have become quite common now.
Zorawar Singh, while interacting with Youngbites said, “Chhath pujan is mainly done in the states of Bihar, Jharkhand and UP. In Jammu people from these states are helping in building Jammu as they are working as labour in our state. Their efforts can never be ignored. People from those states are helping in development of our state. Danchet Singh and his whole team along with the volunteers from Team Jammu have made arrangements for three days for the people who are performing Chhath Puja. We salute the ladies of these states as they help in nation building. These ladies perform 3 days long pooja and do not eat or drink anything for these three days, so it is a very big thing”.
The Chhath Puja is dedicated to the Sun and his wives Usha and Sangya or Sandhya in order to thank them for bestowing the bounties of life on earth and to request the granting of certain wishes. Chhath does not involve any idol worship. The rituals of the festival are rigorous and are observed over a period of four days. They include holy bathing, fasting and abstaining from drinking water (Vratta), standing in water for long periods of time, and offering prasad (prayer offerings) and arghya to the setting and rising sun. The main worshipers, called Parvaitin (from Sanskrit parv, meaning 'occasion' or 'festival'), are usually women. However, a large number of men also observe this festival as Chhath is not a gender-specific festival. Some devotees also perform a prostration march as they head for the river banks.
Environmentalists claim that Chhath is the most eco-friendly Hindu festival. Although the festival is observed most elaborately in Madhesh (southern) region of Nepal and Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand and UP, it is also more prevalent in areas where migrants from those areas have a presence.
