Tall claims of the authorities to initiate process for setting up counselling cells for the students choosing new subjects have been miserably failed in several Government Degree colleges.
The main objective of the counselling cells was to guide the aspiring students in choosing modern Indian and classical languages viz Sanskrit, Hindi, Dogri, Kashmiri, Punjabi, Urdu, Persian and Arabic for graduate courses at the time of admission.
But ironically the counselling cells have failed to serve the purpose, although at the time of BJP/PDP government ,former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had stated to introduce local languages like Kashmiri, Dogri and Punjabi at school and college levels.
As per the reports although the counselling cells have been formed in few colleges, several colleges have yet to initiate the process of establishing the cells in degree colleges.
It is worthwhile to mention here that, the GGM Science College, one of the prestigious higher education institutions of J&K, introduced three add-on courses but no modern Indian or classical language course. The Government SPMR College of Commerce is also sticking to only main courses like BBA, BCA, MCom, BCom (Honours), PGDBM, etc.
Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar has introduced the modern Indian language course in Hindi, Urdu, Dogri and Punjabi. In Udhampur district, the Government Degree College has introduced a few add-on courses but no language course.
The matter of fact is that majority of government degree colleges in Jammu province have not introduced modern Indian language courses. The students are not much aware about their significance. The reasons cited is that government colleges lack the faculty to teach these languages. Of more than 40 colleges in Jammu division, most of the institutions are running the same-old courses since long.
