Muharram denotes the beginning of the Islamic year. The Islamic community considers this month to be the holiest month. The word Muharram denotes forbidden. The Sunni Muslim community fasts on the tenth day of Muharram, which is called the Day of Ashura. During the festival, Shia Muslims do different aspects with different intentions. The Shia Muslim community mourns the demise of Hussain Ibn Ali, the son of Ali and the grandson of Prophet Muhammad from the Karbala battle. Karbala is a famous destination of pilgrimage in Iraq. Hussain Ibn Ali was killed in Karbala in 680 AD. Till the end, he fought the army of Yazid I and was finally killed in the battle. The 10th day of Muharram, the Day of Ashura, is an occasion to remember the brave sacrifice of Hussain. The Day of Ashura is also important to Muslims because it is reported that on this day Moses and his followers obtained victory over the Egyptian Pharaoh. Muharram is considered to be the period of recalling and mourning the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain by the community of Shia Muslims, which starts mourning from the first night of Muharram. A greater amount of importance is placed on the first ten days of the festival. The community wears black clothes on the opening day of Muharram and submits prayers. Black color denotes the color of grieving. On the tenth day, Shia Muslims take out processions via streets. They walk barefoot on the roads. They sing and suppurate loudly as an act of mourning for Hussain. The tenth day of Muharram, the last day, is a gazetted holiday in the country. Therefore, post offices, banks and government offices remain closed on the day. Islamic businesses and stores also remain closed or have reduced working hours. Large parades, marches and prayer meetings can cause the local disruption to traffic. Muslim-dominated localities may face the traffic issues during the festival. Muharram is one of the most significant Islamic festivals. The festival is celebrated in all parts of the country by Muslims . Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh are the three Indian states, which are famous to celebrate the festival. Some Muslims fast during daylight hours on the ninth and 10th days of the month. They may also attend special prayer meetings in mosques or private homes. Not all Muslim groups observe this occasion in the same manner. Some Muslims regard Muharram as the month of mourning, commemorating the Battle of Karbala. Muharram is primarily an Islamic holiday but people of other religions may also take part in or observe the Muharram activities in India. Both Sunni and Shia Muslims observe the 10th day of Muharram in India and worldwide. Many Shia Muslims observe Muharram as a month of mourning. The 10th of Muharram marks the date when carnage took place at Kerbala and when Imam Hussain died in 680 CE. Imam Hussain was the Prophet Muhammed's grandson. Muslims believe that God created Adam and Eve on the 10th of Muharram, which was also when an Egyptian pharaoh and his soldiers drowned in the Red Sea later in time. As Muharram is the 'month of remembrance', there are solemn and commemorative events rather than joyful celebrations. For Shia Muslims, this day commemorates the death of Muhammad's grandson Imam Husayn ibn Ali - and some of his family and companions - at the Battle of Karbala. As part of Ashura, many Muslims take part in an act of mourning called matam. Shia and Sunni Muslims from Islamic community observe the event of Muharram differently. Though the primary ritual on the day of Ashura consists of public expressions of mourning. It falls on the tenth day of this month and many people consider it synonymous with the month of Muharram especially among Shias. Many important events have occurred during this month, but one of the most important ones was the Battle of Karbala, the battle erupted and Hussein, and all his forces, were killed, and their women and children taken as prisoners. This battle has become the centerpiece of Shi’a tradition and has been recounted many times in the Islamic literature of the Shia. Many Muslims choose to fast during the first ten days of this month. Of course, during this period of fasting, different Muslim groups fast in different fashions. Therefore The Sunni Muslims Keep Fast On That Day. Correspondingly People Were Asked To Keep Fast Before The Day Of Ashura ( That Is The 9th Day Of Muharram ). Shia Muslims Also Mourn For Death Of Imam Hussein And His Family For Their Sacrifice By Praying In Exuberance And Celebrate The Events. As Hussein Ibn Ali Was Crucify In The Month Of Moharram Shia Muslims Honour Respect Muharram. In The First Month Of The Year Muharram When The Moon Is Sight, It Signals That The New Year Has Been Start. The Fast Is Start From The First Day Of The Muharram Till Tenth Day Of The Muharram Hussein And His Followers Were Penurious Of Water From The 7th Day And On The 10th Day. All The Followers Of Hussein And Hussein Himself Was Kill By The Army Of Yazid 1 In The Battle Of Karbala. Likewise, The Outliving Family Members And The Followers Of Hussein Were Incarcerate There Itself. The day stands as a symbol of struggle against injustice and oppression. Ashura also marks the day Musa was saved from the Pharaoh of Egypt by God. During the month of Muharram, some mosques provide free meals on certain nights of the month to all people. Muslim empire had slid into political turmoil and corruption as Yazid unsurped power and slowly began destroying the moral fabric of society.Hussain did not want violence, but was prepared to defend himself and sacrifice all he had for the greater good of his people. In recent years, some Shia clerics have been discouraged the bloodletting, saying it creates a negative image of their community.
