ISBT buses, limited roads trigger rush-hour jams

Authorities tighten noose issue advisory to the operators

The flow of traffic and haphazard unauthorized parking always remain a challenge for the authorities. Times to time several measures were put in forth to curb this menace.
Whether it is minibuses, private taxi operators or the buses interstate buses and taxi operators plying on different routes are parked in haphazard manner at BC road. The situation becomes worse during evening hours when dozen of buses are parked on the BC road in zig- zag way making difficult for the commuters as well as pedestrians using BC road.
These jams are frequent on BC road as the number of buses entering the city is very high and the traffic movement gets further complicated. Several other roads, including Jewel, Indira Chowk, KC crossing stretch witness rush-hour traffic jams.
Talking to Young Bites correspondent several commuters said that the traffic movement is badly affected during the evening hours when dozens of buses line up along the both side of road, narrowing its width for routine traffic. Even the police personal can be seen trying their best to streamline the traffic movement.
Some of the commuters who ply daily on this stretch said that several times the issue has been brought to into the notice of authorities and of late though authorities have issued advisory to the ISBT transport unions.
The latest advisory issued by Superintendent of Police said that ISBT is functioning at Narwal from quiet some time but despite of that Interstate Buses used to come to Bus Stand for picking of passengers and this practice is unhealthy in view of Traffic Congestion at Bus stand area in view of ongoing construction work of Multi Tier parking at Old Bus Stand B.C. Road Jammu. The traffic pressure has increased in Bus Stand/BC Road area and is causing heavy impediment in free flow of traffic besides inconvenience to other road users. All the Public Transporters Unions/Transporters/Stake holders are informed through the medium of this notice that all Interstate Buses shall operate fully from ISBT Narwal to de congest the Bus Stand/BC Road area for convenience of general Public. After 15 Days of publishing of this notice no vehicle (Interstate Bus) should come to Bus Stand for their operation and the violators, if any shall be booked under the relevant provisions of Law.
Welcoming this move commuters using the BC road stretch said that it is indeed a good initiative by the authorities but let’s see whether the advisory is followed in its true sense by the transport union in the time frame given, if so the commuters as well as pedestrians can have a sign of relief from frequent long jams due to parked ISBT buses and taxi operators.
