Categorically, several unregistered and unprofessional persons are running news portals in Jammu & Kashmir from the last couple of years and which has become a tool for them to loot people and bureaucrats.
Police should register cases against self-styled chief editors of news portal who publish news in an attempt to gain TRP and not to do ethical journalism. While these fake news portal operators need to pull down the news published online which is totally false and far from reality.
News portals which are running by non-professional people to get their work done by blackmailing officials under the pressure tactics of ‘media’ is uploading fake and are trying to demean the professional journalism. According to reports, many people are operating the news portals, who are unprofessional and known for blackmailing people through online mediums on the directions of their boss who works in various government Department.
There are many people who run these news facebook pages who haven't even completed Class X and have no idea about reporting or journalism.
Whereas, divisional commissioner of Kashmir, had asked his field officers to chalk out measures for curbing rumour-mongering. He also directed the operators of social media news agencies to obtain proper permission from the concerned deputy commissioners for posting news on social media news groups along with sources.
But it is unlikely anyone will follow the orders because at the end of the day, those law enforcing agencies and its officer too want 'publicly'.
However, it is a good decision to curb rumour-mongering but if the Jammu and Kashmir government is planning to regulate even the professional journalists who publish news online, then it is a step towards curbing the freedom of the press.
Pertinently, even the government — by registering such groups and pages — is trying to legally turn rumour-mongers into journalists. These are thugs, blackmailers and have not an iota of idea what journalism means. They do it for promoting people, making transfers in government departments and shielding the corrupt.
However, earlier police need to book several administrators of whats app groups and facebook pages who are either involved in uploading fake news and rumours, even misleading posts on Facebook and WhatsApp so that necessary action is taken at the earliest.
