International Justice Day, is an international day celebrated throughout the world on July 17 as part of an effort to recognize the emerging system of international criminal justice. July 17was chosen because it is the anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute, the treaty that created the International Criminal Court. The aim of this day is to unite everyone who wants to support justice as well as promote victims rights. It is to help prevent serious crimes and those that put the peace, security and well-being of the world at risk. It unites all those who wish to support justice, promote victims' rights, and help prevent crimes that threaten the peace, security and well-being of the world. Governments, civil society organizations, legal associations, students and activists around the globe celebrate World Day for International Justice on July 17. World Day for International Justice recognizes the nascent and strengthening system of international justice that has emerged since the Nuremburg and Tokyo Trials after World War II. Numerous efforts to provide justice and redress for the most unspeakable acts of inhumanity have brought forth increasingly powerful international justice mechanisms from the International Court of Justice, to the ad hoc tribunals. Each year, people around the world use this day to host events to promote international criminal justice, especially support for the International Criminal Court. The day has been successful enough to attract international news attention, and for groups to use the day to focus attention on particular issues such as genocide crimes against humanity, war crimes , the crime of aggression and serious crimes of violence against women. Every year on July 17, World Day for International Justice is observed all around the world. The aim of the day is to promote international criminal justice and as a way of supporting the work of the ICC. It stands for the International Criminal Court. It came about when 120 states adopted a statute in Rome. It was known as the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. All the countries that agreed to adopt the statute were accepting the jurisdiction of the ICC, with regards the prosecution of very serious crimes. The idea was not for the ICC to replace national courts. It is only able to intervene when a country can’t or won’t carry out investigations and prosecute perpetrators. The efforts made the present Government for the democratization of the country are reaching now the pinnacle of the path. The International Criminal Court is the product of a shared global commitment - a promise that has been made and broken too many times throughout history: every time we see the most horrific crimes committed, the world says “never again”, and promises that the next time will be different, and we will not have to apologise again to victims for action that is too little, too late. In fact the efficiency of the ICC in being a forward-looking institution, with no aim to investigate the past but with the scope to avoid that the previous events could happen again. The HRAA asks the Republic of Turkey to adopt the Rome Statute and become a state party to the International Criminal Court not only to emphasize the democratization process which is undergoing, but also to show the will to confront with its past in approaching the forthcoming anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. International Criminal Justice and the 15th Anniversary of the ICC under the theme “Human rights and fight against impunity: the role of international criminal justice. The last century has been the bloodiest in human history with hundreds of millions of casualties of mass rape, forced expulsion, disappearances, torture, slavery and other assaults on human dignity. The strengthening of international criminal justice in the last 20 years, and especially the adoption of the Rome Statute and establishment of the new system of international criminal justice and this great Court, will be viewed as a revolutionary advance for peace and the rule of law. A permanent deterrent to the architects of such horrific crimes was created, when the jurisdiction of the ICC began. July 17th was chosen as the day to mark this occasion because it is the anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute, the treaty that created the ICC. Since that day in 1998, one hundred thirty-nine countries have signed the Courts treaty and nearly eighty States, representative of every region of the world, have ratified it. The ICC is the first permanent and independent international judicial institution capable of trying individuals accused of the most serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights law. World Day for International Justice is also referred to as International Criminal Justice Day or International Justice Day. As the day's aim is the promotion international criminal justice, it remains a clear showing of support for the ICC. .IJD is a reminder for all states committed to fair and impartial justice for victims of the worst crimes around the world: to urgently ensure continued support for the international justice system. IJD is also a reminder for the Court’s strongest advocates, civil society: to stand firm in their original commitment in getting the ICC established, now to advance a Rome Statute system of international justice that works for all.Concept of this day is the need for universality and the International Criminal Court’s jurisdiction over the crime of aggression. Our Office stands against impunity for gross violations of human rights. We would like to see those responsible for such violations held to account. We care about this for two reasons: The first reason is that the justice is very important for the victims and their families. They need justice to find closure on what actually happened. People really have this embedded sense of justice. While it will never bring their family members, friends, loved ones back or restore them to the people they once were, receiving justice can help to address the loss and relieve the pain. Justice is also necessary for the community as a whole. Reparations can include compensation, but also medical and psychological assistance, symbolic reparations like memorials, and other forms. This is just one, highly significant aspect of the evolution that has stemmed from the work of the ad hoc tribunals. The ICTY was established by the Security Council in to bring to justice those responsible for serious violations of international humanitarian law committed at different places. Those who commit gross violations of human rights or violations of international humanitarian law that amount to international crimes, such as systematic murder, torture, rape, enforced disappearance, enslavement, and destruction of property now have no safe haven. We believe that it is the duty of every State to put mechanisms in place to protect its people against violations, and also to ensure accountability in the face of violations. But this is not just a belief. The international human rights obligations of States make it a reality, and it is a key principle upon which the International Criminal Court operates.
So, we have concrete success stories even if international justice sometimes seems at a slow pace. At the same time, our justice mechanisms are growing stronger and stronger, and the pace of justice is gathering speed. There is progress as you can see. Of course we would like to see much more cases, because the current number does not reflect the extent of the atrocious acts being committed, and for these justice mechanisms to fulfil their deterrent role there should be many more of these trials. We also need to see national courts fulfilling their roles - these trials should be held at the national level too. The message that those who commit violations cannot and will not escape justice has to remain unwavering, at the international and national levels.
