“Counselling is a common talking therapy that is used to help people deal with lots of different life problems. However, like the term 'therapy' counselling is a term that is often also used interchangeably for talking therapies in general,” said Dr Chand Trehan, First Woman Counsellor, here while interacting with Young Bites.
This time the woman we are talking about is Dr Chand Trehan, First Woman Counsellor. Talking with YoungBites, she narrated her story and the challenges which she faced after being a counselor, and also enlightened the Importance of Girl Child in our Society.
In the interactive session that followed, Dr Chand Trehan said Counselling is a unique, one-to-one relationship between two people who agree to meet privately and regularly for a period of time with the aim of restoring emotional well-being to the client. It is different from any other relationship as it is focussed 100% on the client. It allows you a safe place to be yourself and to say what you truly feel in confidence without fear of judgment, criticism or unwanted advice.
She said that Talking about feelings is a necessary part of therapy, which might seem strange at first, especially if you are used to bottling things up. When something is getting you down, counselling can help you gain a clearer understanding of your emotions. Feeling that these are OK allows you to deal better with whatever is in your path at this moment in time, whatever has happened in the past. A trained counsellor will listen to you carefully, paying attention to the things that matter to you. When you cannot see the wood for the trees, talking to a counsellor can help you to see your own strengths, resources and opportunities you may not have seen before.
Dr Chand Trehan said, “there is an urgent need to change this archaic mindset of the patriarchal Indian society which views girls as liabilities. It needs to be established that girls are in no way less than boys. When given the right chances to nurture their talent and skills, they have it in them to excel in different areas of life. It is therefore imperative that both government and non-government organizations work in cohesion to spread the message of saving and educating the girl child.”
She said that discrimination against girls in India has been going on for ages now. Even today, there are several sections of the Indian society where the girl child is treated as a burden which is very shameful.
“In order to achieve true women empowerment, it is important that we begin with the girl children. This is because girls of today are the women of tomorrow. The role of social welfare organizations is critical here as it is not possible for the government to reach every nook and corner of the country. As the aware citizens, we can support organizations which work for the eradication of female infanticide and women empowerment,” she added.
