The 21st Shanghai International Film Festival will be held from June 16 to 25, 2018. Online submission for “Golden Goblet Awards”, “Asian New Talent Awards”and “International Film Panorama” is open now on the official website of Shanghai International Film Festival for film submissions. Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) adheres to the motive of “Focusing on Asia, Promoting Chinese Films, Supporting New Talents”. Since the launch of the Asian New Talent Award in its 7th edition, SIFF has been dedicated to discovering and supporting the new force in Asian films, and introducing outstanding film talents in Asia to the world. Domestic filmmaker and actor Jiang Wen will serve as jury president for the Golden Goblet Awards, while Hong Kong film producer Nansun Shi will chair the panel for the festival's Asian New Talent Awards.
Founded in 1993, Shanghai International Film Festival focuses on Asia, promotes Chinese films and supports new talents. With authoritative and professional awards, dialogues between domestic and international industry elites, negotiation on film trading, financing of SIFF projects, an unprecedented line-up of stars and jury members from all over the world, splendid international film panorama and audience meetings, it provides an excellent, professional and pragmatic cooperation platform for industry professionals from different regions. As the city gears up for the opening of its 21st annual Shanghai International Film Festival this weekend — running June 16-25 at different venues, with highlights including the China debut of this year’s Cannes Palme D’Or winner Shoplifters and tributes to Luis Bunuel and Ingmar Bergman — here’s where to stay and what to eat and experience in what is sometimes called the Paris of the East.
At the 20th Shanghai International Film Festival in 2017, a total of 2528 films from 106 countries and regions were submitted for completion. The Golden Goblet Awards were awarded to PEDICAB, directed by the Filipino director Paolo Villaluna whose work had won “Best Feature Film”, I’M A KILLER, a new work of the Polish “Best Director”, Maciej Pieprzyca, and Chinese director, Cai Shangjun’s work, THE CONFORMIST, a premiere film with great ingenuity winning “Best Actor Award”. The “Best Animation Film” of the 2017 Golden Goblet Awards went to LOVING VINCENT, in commemoration of the 125th anniversary of Van Gogh’ birth. Award for Best Documentary Film went to “WHEN PAUL CAME OVER THE SEA”, a work of Jakob Preuss that tells the story of Cameroun refugees. Awards for short films were newly set up in the 2017 Golden Goblet Awards. After rounds of selection and screening, 15 works were included in the final list. BAKA was awarded “Best Live Action Short Film” and “Best Animated Short Film” went to LATE SEASON.
The set-up of Asian New Talent Awards aims to explore potential new talents in Asia, selecting excellent movies and filmmakers from different countries and regions by means of awards nomination. At the 20th Shanghai International Film Festival, works from India, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, Turkey and China (including Taiwan and Hong Kong regions) were shortlisted. SHUTTLE LIFE from Malaysia and other films won the awards. With women's voices growing louder and louder in all walks of life, women's right to work and space for expression have also become common concerns in the film industry.
Shanghai International Film Festival has also been cooperating with other world film festivals in an all-round manner, creating an international platform for Chinese films and new talented directors. So far, cooperation is established with Venice International Film Festival, Toronto Film Festival, Tokyo International Film Festival and Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, and “SIFF World Express” has been set up to recommend excellent works mutually. At the end of last year and early this year, the “Chinese-Japanese Film Gala” was held in six cities in China and Japan respectively, wining wide popularity among fans. To find you and me in films and to understand each other through films have become a soul bridge between Chinse and Japanese audiences.
In recent years, with the increasing growth of China’s economic strength and the rise of its international status, Chinese films have attracted more and more attention from people around the world, and SIFF, held in June annually, has become a great event for filmmakers worldwide, whose universal industry appeal, international influence, and effect on the world’s multicultural film culture and development of the film industry have also been praised by people inside and outside the industry. This Regulation is drawn to cover participation in short film (Live Action Short Film and Animated Short Film) competitions for Golden Goblet Awards of the Festival. The Documentary Panorama is an important program at the Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), for it is a window for the viewers to touch upon excellent documentary works. The jury for the 21st Shanghai International Film Festival was announced at a press conference in Beijing and it includes renowned filmmakers from around the world. On the festival's opening day (June 16), representatives from nearly 30 film festivals, including the Cairo International Film Festival, Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) and the Malaysia International Film Festival, are expected to officially form the Belt and Road Film Festival Alliance. Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) is the only competitive film festival in China approved by FIAPF. SIFF focuses on awards, markets, forums and film exhibitions so as to build an international platform, and promote the development of the Chinese film industry. Chinese films have attracted more and more attention from people around the world, and SIFF, held in June annually, has become a great event for filmmakers worldwide, whose universal industry appeal, international influence, and effect on the world’s multicultural film culture and development of the film industry have also been praised by people inside and outside the industry.
