Polythene threat looms large ahead of monsoon

Although the state has put ban on plastic and time to time several steps were initiated for implementing the ban yet the condition of almost every river bed, nallahs and choking drains have worsens the situation in Jammu.
In every monsoon one can see choking drains due to various polythene and plastic products completely creating havoc in city roads and streets in Jammu
Talking to Young Bites correspondent Rajeev Sharma said that there seems to be on effective mechanism and serious efforts put forth by the authorities.
He added that it is not only a civic issue but also an environmental problem and merely publication of circulars is not enough the authorities must have mechanism for deal with dangerous problem people are facing.
In fact, polythene carry bags are still being used under the garb of recycled or bio-degradable bags. Most of the solid waste dumped in drains comprises polythene.
The worst part is that not only the authorities are responsible lack of awareness is also the major reason for this situation.
In spite of ban polythene bags are still being used under the garb of recycled or bio-degradable bags. As most people throw these polythene bags here and there resulting into the choking of drains and as such heaps of plastic dumps can be seen in nallahs and rivers. Not only the people residing in localities but various establishments also dump plastic waste and polythene in various nallahas and rivers during night hours.
Almost ebery year ahead of monsoon the JMC conduct extensive cleaning of drains across the Jammu city but the situation seems remain deplorable with no sign of relief.
Situation can be well gauged from the situation that at several places, the authorities are using JCBs to clean drains, nallahas and rivers to remove polythene and plastics.
