Anti-Terrorism Day is observed every year throughout the country on 21st May. The day is marked by a pledge taking ceremony among other activities. The Day is observed to generate awareness in the country among all sections of people, about the danger of terrorism and violence and its effect on the people, society and the country as a whole. It was on this day in 1991 that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi fell to the designs of terrorists.The objective behind the observance of Anti-Terrorism Day is to wean away the people from terrorism and violence. On the occasion, debates, discussions, symposia, seminars, lectures, etc. are held in schools, colleges and universities on the dangers of terrorism and violence. Many NGOs, social and cultural organizations also organize their own programmes to highlight the ill effects of violence and terrorism. Anti-terrorism/anti-violence pledge is taken in all Government offices, public sector undertakings and other public institutions.The Day is observed to generate awareness in the country among all sections of people, about the danger of terrorism and violence and its effect on the people, society and the country as a whole. 21,” May every year is observed as Anti Terrorism Day with the objective of weaning away the youth from terrorism and the cult of violence by highlighting the sufferings of common people and showing as to how it is prejudicial to the national interest. The’pledge taking’ceremony in all Government offices, public sector underaking and other public institutions is an important feature of the observant of the Anti-Terrorism Day. Holding of symposiums,seminars, organizing debates and discussions is a determined and sustained drive to bring about mass awakening against terrorism and violence by making appropriate projections through electronic and print media i.e newspaper radio doordarshan etc.Conducting mass education programme to highlight ill effects of violence and terrorism is also a welcome step. All over India, May 21st is observed as Anti Terrorism Day in the memory of former Indian PM Rajiv Gandhi who passed away on this day. On this day in the year 1991, former India’s PM Rajiv Gandhi was killed brutally by terrorist attacks. This day is also aimed in bringing awareness in the country among all sections of people, regarding dangers of terrorism, violence and its effect on people, society and nation as a whole. Many NGO’s, social and cultural organisations also organise their own programmes to show negative effects of violence and terrorism .Its main objective is to make the people aware of anti-social act of terrorism and its impact on human suffering and lives. In fact we can’t deny the fact that the whole world including India is facing terrorism on a wide scale. Basically the terrorists want to create fear in the minds of the common people. Without any remorse they kill thousands of people because they don’t have any conscience.It is necessary to propagate the message of humanity and peace. Indian Government has taken the step by celebrating Anti-Terrorism every year to highlight the importance of fighting with the activities of terrorism.Main objective of this day is To promote unity among the people by planting seed of unity among the people and to provide education and training to the youngsters this will prevent them from joining different terrorist groups. To generate awareness in the country about the danger of terrorism, violence and its dangerous effect on the people, society and whole country.
Martyrdom of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, also known as Anti Terrorism Day is observed across India on 21 May. The date so chosen is to commemorate the death anniversary of one of the most eminent Prime Ministers of India, Rajiv Gandhi (20 August 1944 – 21 May 1991). He had been victimized of this menace and to honor and respect his contributions, the day is celebrated on annual basis. This day is also observed to make people aware of the ongoing terrorist activities and the precautions to be taken by the commoners to prevent these acts of terrorism. Promoting unity, peace and harmony across the nation has been one of the major motives behind celebrating this day. Every year, a two minutes silence is observed in whole India to mourn for the loss of Rajiv Gandhi and many other innocent people who have been victimized by the terrorism.Anti terrorism day “A “War against terrorism”is an impracticable conception if it means fighting terrorism with terrorism”. Anti Terrorism or Anti Violence Pledge is taken in all the government offices and public sector undertakings which is as follows – “We, the people of India, having abiding faith in our country’s tradition of non-violence and tolerance, hereby solemnly affirm to oppose with our strength, all forms of terrorism and violence. We pledge to uphold and promote peace, social harmony, and understand among all fellow human beings and fight the forces of disruption threatening human lives and values.” Several other activities take place on the Anti-Terrorism Day, including seminars promoting anti-terrorism, floral wreath is laid on the Rajiv Gandhi statue, anti integrity oath is taken and marches are carried out by the Congressmen all across the nation. The main aim of this Day is to reduce the terrorism to the maximum possible extent. Rajiv Ratna Gandhi (20 August 1944 – 21 May 1991) was the sixth Prime Minister of India, serving from 1984 to 1989. He took office after the 1984 assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, his mother, to become the youngest Indian premier. Rajiv authorised an extensive police and army campaign to contain terrorism in Punjab. A state of martial law existed in the Punjab state, and civil liberties, commerce and tourism were greatly disrupted. There are many accusations of human rights violations by police officials as well as by the militants during this period. It is alleged that even as the situation in Punjab came under control, the Indian government was offering arms and training to the LTTE rebels fighting the government of Sri Lanka. The Purpose of observing World Anti-Terrorism Day is to Spread the message of global peace and non-violence. Deter vulnerable youth from following cult practices and being misguided. Device ways and hold awareness programmes to protect the future generations from radical influence.
