Guidance and counseling is an integral part of schools as the counseling cells are the link between the student, school and the home
The role and importance of the counsellor has been felt from the past few years. Whereas earlier taking help of a counsellor was for the ‘weak minded’, today the counsellor coordinates all academic and co-curricular activities in schools. The counsellor is the guide and mentor of the students and staff alike, ensuring productivity, development and preventive measures.
In the Sate of Jammu and Kashmir two counseling cells were established in schools with an objective to promote stress-free environment in schools which is considered necessary for overall development of the students.
These counseling cells apart from other task were also assigned to give guidance to the students seeking admission in 11th after passing 10th and provide necessary counseling about the choice of courses one should opt for . But unfortunately these counseling cells have failed to give proper result.
The motto of these counseling cells in various higher secondary schools is to guide students so that they do not get confused in opting particular stream of subjects and choose streams/subjects after proper consultation with members of the cell, but a few students choose subjects based on counselling. A majority of them succumb parental pressure and insist on science streams irrespective of the percentage received in science as well as overall.
It is worthwhile to mention here that the guidance and counselling cells were established in higher secondary schools as directed by the Directorate of School Education, Jammu, to guide admission seekers to choose streams.
Talking to Young Bites Ashish Sawhney a teacher by profession said that although tremendous change has been seen in the education system , especially the higher secondary level, in the last few years as several new subjects and courses were introduced taking into cognizance about their future demand , but the traditional mindset of parents I has not changed much which is the biggest hurdle that stops their children to opt for new subjects.
He further added that the counselors appointed in these counseling cells rarely explain in depth about the choice of course and mere guide about the courses available in the particular higher secondary and in such cases the student insist on the subject he/she is familiar from past few years.
He added that in so many cases even the students who secure less that 50% marks insist to choose science stream, despite having so many combinations/optional subjects in all streams and even parents are not ready to think beyond the science stream (medical/non-medical) without knowing the strength of their wards. In fact, both parents and student come to school at the time of admission with pre-mind set.
Talking to Young Bites Correspondent several students opined that arts and commerce streams holds little significance and considered these subjects as for those students who are not good in studies
