To pacify the annoyed BJP members, senior NC leader Mohammad Shafi Uri Monday sought to draw the attention of the Assembly to statements in which top leadership of the NC had disowned Mohammad Akbar Lone’s statement.
“The stand of our party is clear. The NC is committed to the unity and integrity of the country,” Lone said, adding, “Our party has never challenged India’s sovereignty.”
Earlier, BJP members created uproar in the House and demanded action against Lone and the registration of sedition charges against him. “Some members have made a mockery of the House by raising such demands which are anti-Constitution,” BJP member RS Pathania said, adding, “Earlier, some members have raised the demand for Azadi and now one of the senior members who has served as Assembly Speaker has raised pro-Pakistan slogans.”
“Lone does not deserve to be a member of the Assembly,” Pathania said. He was supported by his party colleague Rajeev Sharma who vociferously demanded registration of sedition charges against Lone.
Rajeev Jasrotia, another BJP member, observed that it was for the first time in the history of J&K that a member had raised pro-Pakistan slogans on the floor of the House. He also echoed the demand that an FIR be registered against Lone.
J&K Assembly Speaker Kavinder Gupta later asserted that as custodian he would not allow the august House to be misused by some members as a platform for pursing anti-India activities.
Without naming National Conference (NC)’s Mohammad Akbar Lone, who had raised pro-Pakistan slogans on the floor of the House on Saturday, the Speaker said some members who had previously committed mistakes should not repeat them and maintain sanctity of the House.
