Think of permanent respite

Drainage and sewerage system in urban areas is an important priority in Indian setting because of rapid urbanization, industrialization, and population growth, along with increase in slum population and migration. In this regard, the presence of efficient drainage and sewerage system is a major factor in the prevention of spread of waterborne diseases in major cities. Treatment of wastewater is one of the important steps to prevent contamination of urban underground water. For over several years now, people in the Jammu city complain that their concerns have hardly been considered seriously. They say that they look forward to some permanent respite to resolve their perennial problems. “Officials visit the neighbourhood, listen to our problems and forget them over a period of time. The place is prone to inundation. What is required is a complete revamp of the drainage channels to put an end to the problem. Many localities in the city are getting inundated due to rains as there is no provision to divert the water. Busy localities are also presenting an ugly look with small ponds on road margins because of rain. Travelling on many roads for riders and pedestrians has become a nightmarish experience. The intensity of the problem has been turning from bad to worse when it rains intermittently. The first showers might have brought cheers on farmers’ faces, but in the city people suffered water inundated on the roads. The problem has aggravated as there is no arrangement to drain out water from the roads. Though the storm water drains were proposed, the task is not accomplished so far. Only some works were completed in some places and many other places are still waiting for their turn to begin the drain works. Stagnation of water is so severe that traffic jams have become part of routine life for road users. Movement of two-wheelers and pedestrians comes to a halt when downpour continues for a few minutes here. There appears no problem to the troubles to people even during this monsoon as assurances of authorities to finish storm water drains failed to bring any change in woes of pedestrians and light vehicle riders. Experts listed a range of factors like usage of plastic bags, poorly maintained drains and lack of proper sewage disposal as major causes of water clogging in cities during rains and said that planning has to have a long-term perspective and infrastructure should keep pace with growth of population. Urban floods are entirely manmade with poorly maintained drains, plastic bags, shrinking open spaces and climate change contributing to accumulation of water on roads after a heavy downpour. steps such as rainwater harvesting, ban on use of plastic bags and better use of weather forecasts will go a long way in helping tackle flooding in cities after rains.
